To maintain and enhance Hilton Head's 12-mile stretch of beaches, several capital projects are planned. Details regarding the upcoming 2027 beach project are included below for your convenience.
The Beach Renourishment Sand Project
To support its recent beach renourishment project, the Town of Hilton Head Island will install sand fencing and dune plants along sections of beach on the Atlantic Ocean and Port Royal Sound, starting Oct. 5.
The renourishment project, completed in July, restored approximately 9.2 miles of beach with 2.4 million cubic yards of sand. Renourishment restores beach width, but waves, tides, and storms continue to move sand over time. This movement is a normal part of a healthy coastal system. To help maintain this system, certain beach dune areas have been identified for strengthening and stabilizing through the installation of sand fencing and dune plants. The fences and plants will help to stabilize and retain sand as part of the dune system.
The sand fencing phase of this effort will begin Oct. 5 and be completed by the end of the month. Dune planting is anticipated to begin in early December and be completed in the spring of 2027.
Sand fencing will be installed in the following areas, identified by the nearest beach markers:
• Tower Beach Club to Seaside Sparrow Road (markers 12 to 19)
• Coligny Beach to Shipyard/Sonesta Resort (markers 59A to 72B)
• Palmetto Dunes, Captain's Walk to Armada Street (markers 79 to 84)
• Singleton Beach (markers 94 to 96.5)
• Burkes Beach to Bradley Beach (markers 98 to 102)
• Fish Haul Beach Park shoreline
The fencing will be about four feet tall and made of untreated wood slats. Sections will be set at angles to help trap sand, with open spaces left around them. Where necessary, dune plants will be added along all new fencing, starting on the beach side of the fence and extending about 20 feet back toward the dunes.
