There’s a side to Hilton Head Island that most people don’t know. When those visiting for the first time (or even the hundredth time) think of the island, they’ll think of white sandy beaches, breathtaking golf courses and a laid-back vibe that sets your mind at ease almost as soon as you cross the bridge.
But Hilton Head Island Island is also home to a thriving arts scene, helped in no small part by the natural beauty that’s in abundance nearly everywhere you go. It’s hard to find a cotton candy-tinted sunset around here without three or four artists setting up a makeshift en plein air studio to capture the moment.
So where can you go to join this vibrant community of the artistically inclined? Read on.
The Art Café
Need a little liquid encouragement for your pursuit of artistic excellence? The Art Café offers a wide range of paint-your-own pottery that lets you dabble in any number of styles, plus a full beverage menu thanks to its partnership with Rockfish right downstairs. Bring the whole family out to craft your own wall art, dinnerware and more with a style all your own.
And for those on a family vacation, they even offer special kids-only classes upstairs in The Art Café that let you enjoy a quiet grownups-only meal downstairs at Rockfish.
A little bit of this and a little bit of that awaits inside this instructional art instruction studio for adults and kids alike. The KidzArt Studio lets pint-sized Picassos dabble in everything from drawing and painting to ceramic clay, while adult programs run the gamut from painting and clay to stained glass.
Check their Facebook page for a schedule of upcoming classes, workshops and special events.
The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina
In addition to producing several Broadway shows in-house every year and welcoming touring musicians and standup comedians, the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina has served as an incubator for the local arts scene. The Walter Greer Gallery holds a rotating selection of local and international artists, while its workshops cover everything from the visual arts to theatre to jazz.
Check out the full schedule here of upcoming workshops.
Where to Stay
As we mentioned earlier, the scenic beauty of Hilton Head Island is one of the biggest inspirations to our local arts scene. And if you’re going to create like the local artists, you have to be inspired like the local artists.
Available from Vacation Company, 8 Night Harbour is the perfect oceanfront retreat to get the creative juices flowing. Mesmerizing views of seagrass-dusted dunes guide your eye down to the sandy Palmetto Dunes beach, stirring the urge to create. Immerse yourself in the elements on the rear porch, commanding a breathtaking panoramic view of the ocean. From there, it’s simply a matter of putting brush to canvas. And with five elegantly spacious guestrooms set among dazzling luxury and updated amenities including a resort-style swimming pool, the whole family will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy themselves while you create.
